History:

From CCV Website (3/2008): n 1987 Artistic Director David Morales founded Cantare Con Vivo (To Sing With Life) as a not-for-profit, tax-exempt music organization. The original 24-singer mixed choral ensemble was committed to providing the highest quality musical opportunities for its singers and listeners. In 1989 the ensemble expanded to 40 singers and remained as such for a decade, until February 1999, when Cantare reorganized, forming three distinct wings to its program: Cantare Chorale, Chamber Ensemble, and a Music Education and Outreach Program for children in Oakland. The Chorale is the finest of its kind in the East Bay, with 110 auditioned singers performing three different concert programs a season. They successfully completed their first international tour in June 2005, traveling to the Baltic Countries and performing concerts in each. They will again travel to Europe in June 2008. The 24-voice Chamber Ensemble, Cantare's premier group, presents a rich array of the most challenging choral works available, including those hot off the press. The Cantare Children's Choirs of Oakland, under the leadership of Julie Haydon, Director of Cantare's Children's Choirs, consists of 600 plus children in kindergarten through ninth grades. This program is totally free to all its participants. With weekly choral music programs for all K-2 classes at Lincoln and Lafayette Elementary Schools in Oakland's urban center, we are filling the gap left open by cutbacks and misplaced government educational priorities. Our All Star Singers, now in its fourth year, consists of 30 middle-school age singers, including boys with changed voices. This niche is uniquely Cantare's, and is dramatically gaining in musical prominence. Cantare offers a rich variety of both sacred and secular music in styles representing numerous national and international composers (See: Repertoire). Cantare's adult choirs have performed over 90 different concert programs, representing over 800 compositions, including numerous choral/orchestral works. Cantare is funded through the generosity of its singers and supporters in addition to foundations, grants and corporate sponsers, and graciously welcomes tax-deductible contributions to assist in making its events and programs possible. Comments: From CCV Website (3/2008):
The Cantare Chorale, a symphonic choir of 110 auditioned voices, debuted in April 1999 presenting stunning performances of Beethoven's Missa Solemnis. Now the premiere choral ensemble of its size in the East Bay, these past eight seasons have included performances of J. S. Bach's Motets 1, 2 & 6, Haydn's Creation, Brahms' and Verdi's Requiem, Rachmaninoff's Vespers, Poulenc's Gloria, Barber's Prayers of Kierkegaard, Vaughan Williams' Hodie, Bernstein's Chichester Psalms, Zemlinsky's Psalm 13, Robert Ray's Gospel Mass, Respighi's Laud to the Nativity, Pinkham's Christmas Cantata, Brahms' N?§nie, Randall Thompson's Frostiana cycle, Kod?°ly's Psalmus Hungaricus, Stravinsky's Symphony of Psalms, and an array of other large and smaller selections. (See: Repertoire)

In June 2005, the Chorale toured Russia, Finland, Estonia and Sweden. This coming June 2008, the Chorale will tour to Prague, Budapest and Vienna, concertizing along the way. Yes, these people love a challenge!

The Chorale remains committed to bringing the highest musical standards to their performances, associating with the finest instrumentalists from bay area orchestras, and featuring national caliber vocal soloists. "
