Basic Information

Asst Conductor : Sally Dunlop, Director, Cantabella Chamber Choir
Description: Cantabella Children's Chorus is committed to developing within children and young people the love and experience of artistic, beautiful singing. This is accomplished through:

Educational programs designed for developing music literacy, healthy vocal techniques and choral artistry

Only the finest choral literature, since we believe as Zoltan Kodaly did that "children should be led to musical masterpieces by means of musical masterpieces. "

Active participation in performances which develops poise, confidence, self-esteem, teamwork and the satisfaction of striving toward excellence

Our youngest members begin in the Cantabella Training Choirs (CTC), which offers an excellent training program using the Kodaly approach for children K through 4th grades. Singers in the training program are placed in different classes of no more than 13 children each, to allow for more individual attention.

The Cantabella Children's Chorus (CCC) is composed of choristers in the 4th through 7th grades.

Our advanced choristers in the 7th through 10th grades make up the Chamber Choir (CH), and graduates in the 11th and 12 grades may return to sing as alumni.

Singers are placed in various choir levels according to age, maturity, music ability, and theory knowledge. All choirs rehearse once a week with occasional weekend rehearsals when preparing for major performances. Additionally, CCC has the opportunity to participate in choral festivals and workshops which introduce them to other choral groups and renowned clinicians. Qualified singers are often selected to participate in operas requiring children's roles produced by the Livermore Valley Opera Company.

Other Information

History: Cantabella Children's Chorus started as a music literacy class of 10-12 children, ages 5-7, and was inspired by Zoltan Kodaly's philosophy that the singing voice should be every child's first and lifelong musical instrument. The class gradually developed into the Cantabella Children's Chorus with a total membership of more than 150 singers. Many members of the chorus are now very accomplished musicians, studying one or even two other musical instruments. But, they continue to enjoy singing, harmonizing and performing as a choral group. Choral singing has proven to be a great way to touch and be touched by music!
