Chorus Information

Petaluma Chorale

Laila Schoenlein, Director

Information last updated: 2008-08-21
Status: Current

Basic Information

Emphasis: The Petaluma Chorale has about 24 members, men and women, and performs a variety of music from jazz and classical to contemporary and choral music from musicals. I like to do all styles of music, " said Schoenlein. "I think we're unique in that way because we're not a choral group that lends itself to just choral music. There's no sense trying to even do those big works by Bach and Mozart since we don't have that big a group. I'd love to see it become more of a community ensemble, which is what it used to be when it was the Harmoneers years ago. It had between 40 and 50 members then. " "
Size: 24
Concerts/Year: Twice a year, winter and spring.

History:

From article in Petaluma Argus-Courier, August 15, 2007, by Yovanna Bieberich, entitled Singing in Petaluma ": The Petaluma Chorale's history is rooted in what used to be the Harmoneers, a chorus that Schoenlein directed for a number of years. "The Harmoneers have been in Petaluma since 1950, " she said. "For a long time I directed the chorus and put on musicals and community concerts. " Schoenlein eventually left the chorus to return to teaching music full time. "Unfortunately, the Harmoneers didn't keep developing or progressing, " she said. "In the meantime, I started working with high school choirs and went to teaching at Santa Rosa Junior College. I sort of took what used to be the Harmoneers and started a choir through the J.C. " "
