Comments: | The Justin S. Cummins Chorale was founded in 1969 by Dr. Justin S. Cummins. At that time, it was known as the G.L. Bedford Specials, taking its name from Reverend G.L. Bedford, Pastor of the Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church of San Francisco. It is a non-profit organization representing many Bay Area churches. During its first two years, the chorale appeared at the Antioch Baptist Church in Oakland, on San Francisco television station KQED's program On This Day, " and on television station KQDO's program "Gospel With Jodie. " Mr. Richard Herron became pianist for the G.L. Bedford Specials in 1970. The group later became a member of the Gospel Music Workshop of America. In 1970, the group launched the premiere "Academy of Gospel Music Awards " at San Francisco Balboa High School . The Academy Awards have continued ever since. Director Justin S. Cummins received his music education in Richomond, Indiana, receiving his honorary Doctorate Degree from Eastern American University in Indianapolis. He was the Minister of Music at Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church. In addition, he conducted several Gospel Workshops in the Bay Area. He served on the faculty of the National Gospel Music Workshop of America, and was Assistant Chapter Representative, Northern California Chapter. Dr. Cummins passed away on October 15, 1990, and the G.L. Bedford Specials changed its name to honor Dr. Cummins. "" |
